PRODUCTION INFORMATION
An epic drama of faith and courage set in the aftermath of the 1521 Spanish Conquest of the Aztecs in Mexico, The Other Conquest ("La Otra Conquista") opens its worldwide engagements on a wave of unprecedented acclaim.
Premiering in Mexico during Easter in April 1999, The Other Conquest became the highest grossing Mexican dramatic film ever released in that country, a true cultural phenomenon attracting an audience of over one million spectators during its four-month run. Not since Like Water for Chocolate had a Mexican film touched such a profound nerve in audiences from all social backgrounds.
Following that auspicious launch, The Other Conquest was invited to numerous major film festivals throughout the world, winning the Grand Jury Award at the San Antonio Film Festival; becoming the first Spanish-language film ever screened in competition at the American Film Institute's Los Angeles International Film Festival; and receiving the honor of an AFI screening at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC before an invited audience of diplomats and delegates from the Organization of American States (OAS), including the Ambassadors of Mexico and Spain. The Other Conquest has also been honored with invitational screenings and galas at the Mill Valley Film Festival, Chicago Latino Film Festival, and international film festivals in Vancouver, Barcelona, San Juan, Havana and New Delhi.
