“The Other Conquest” (“La Otra Conquista”) To Receive Renewed and Expanded U.S. Theatrical Release
The epic Mexican film The Other Conquest (La Otra Conquista) will receive a renewed and expanded theatrical release in North America May 4th, 2007 by Union Station Media. The film is considered a cultural breakthrough for its profound exploration of the spiritual and psychological effects of colonization.
A boldly imaginative and deeply affecting story of faith and courage, The Other Conquest is written and directed by Salvador Carrasco and produced by Alvaro Domingo. Legendary tenor Plácido Domingo is executive producer and is featured on the soundtrack singing an aria composed especially for the movie. Heading the picture’s international cast are
Damián Delgado (Men with Guns), Elpidia Carrillo (Tortilla Heaven), José Carlos Rodríguez and Iñaki Aierra.
In April 2000, The Other Conquest was successfully released in theatres throughout Los Angeles, Orange County, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, grossing $1,000,000. In Mexico, the film marked the first domestic pick up for 2Oth Century Fox earning box office of $2 million. The Other Conquest was chosen as one of the Ten Best Films of 2000 by the Los Angeles Times emerging as one of the first Mexican motion pictures to achieve both commercial success and critical acclaim in the United States. After the film’s initial opening in Southern California, the plan was to expand the release of the film throughout the rest of the country. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the distributor ceased operation and the film has remained out of distribution until now.
Set in the 1520s, The Other Conquest tells Mexico’s oldest story in a new way. The film depicts the struggle of the Aztec Emperor’s son to preserve his people’s religious and cultural identity in the wake of the invasion of his land by Spanish conquerors and clergymen. Catholic priests began spreading the gospel to the local “heathens” while the Spanish soldiers pillaged the Mexican countryside. Though the region was regarded as one of the most advanced societies in the Western Hemisphere at the time of the Europeans’ arrival, the land, the people and its culture were soon shattered. As such, the film deals with the two forms of conquest – physical and spiritual – that are inherent to colonization, but even more importantly, it tells the story of the natives’ creative resistance against all odds in their will to survive with dignity and pride.
The film delves into the religious, sexual and political conflicts that arise whenever civilizations clash, which gives the picture a powerful historical dimension and its present-day relevance.
“The Other Conquest is one of the most important Mexican films ever produced, remarkable not only for its cinematic quality, but also for its entertainment value and humanism,” said Paul Gardner, President, Union Station Media. “It’s a joy to do this. A lot of people are finally going to have the opportunity to see a truly great film”.
The nomination this year of numerous films and talent from Mexico for Academy Awards signifies the most broad interest and acclaim in Mexican cinema yet. The films, nominated in 16 categories including Best Picture and Best Director and ultimately winning four, follow in a long tradition of Mexican film in America including Amores Perros and Y Tu Mamá También. After helping pave the way in 2000, the makers of The Other Conquest are thrilled to now ride the wave of attention and interest that exists in 2007 for Mexican films in America.
